Public and Private space conceptual model
(different view on differnet levels depending on the light penetration, there fore it makes it easy to distinguish the priavate, semi private and public space.)

Relationship between part and whole

When I looked at the building, I first feel the shape of the building which was a square so I chose a corner of it, and to look at this corner of the house, the extention of the horizontal windows can be felt, then I considered about the garage and the gardens.
Garage: I had included the garage into my model because I think the garage design is very important. At that time, cars were just invented and not very popular, therefore, only rich people can have cars, Le Corbsiers used a large space for garage, this can show the nobble and rich status of the owner.
Hanging garden: The hanging garden on the first floor is shown in my model as well. This garden acts as a connection between the semi private space and private space,  it is also a sign that leads people transit from semi private space into the more public space.
Roof Garden: The roof garden design, as well as the hanging garden on the first floor was designed based on Le Corbsier's concept of "Recovering the land which was taken away by the building". The roof is not left out but used as another open space, acts as a "playground".

Structural Strategy and its relationship with the domestic activities:
(domestic activities part highlighted in red)

5 Modern Architectural points first proposed by Le Corbsier:
1. The pilotis: the columns act as the main structural element, this allows the building "flow in the air". The ground floor sits back, the building is surrounded by the columns on the ground floor, therefore, a space is created for the cars to park or drive.
2. The free plan: there is no bearing walls in Villa Savoye because of the columns which support the building. No bearing walls means that walls can be placed whereever desirable, and it is able to create open space without concerning of changing in building structure. Therefore, Le Corbsier was able to distinguish the private and public space in a diagonal considering about the sun orientation.
3. The free facade: Allows to make the openings on the walls, so Le Corbsier designed the horizontal windows on every side of the building, the horizontal ribbon windows also act as ornamental element on the facade.
4. Horizontal Windows: This allows light penetrate into the the house, gives the owner a 360 degree view of the external landscape.
5. Roof garden: Le Corbsier tried to recover the land which was taken away by the building and he made the roof a garden -- another open space in the house. The window frame on the roof garden "crops" the landscape into the frame to make viewers feel the landscape.

Public and Private Space

Ground Floor: A "U shape" was designed and the private space sits at the back. Since the building is surrounded by landscape,  Le Corbsier created a transparent boundary to create a sense of consistency between the public space and the semi public space. The transparent boundary brings the external landscape into the relative private space.

First floor: The sun orientation and shadow diagram shows how sun shades will be generated at different time at different seasons. At 9am, the shades will be mainly on the west side and at 3pm, shades will be on the east side; therefore, because of the free plan, Le Corbsier could place walls anywhere, and he made the private area at the west side. This was because people do not want morning sunshine to shine into their bedroom windows early in the morning, however, people would like sunshine at the garden in the afternoon so that the can relax, enjoy the sunshine and have a coffee in the garden.
Openings: private space and public space are not defined by walls but the penetration and integration of  light and out side landscapes, that is why opening are important to this house.
First and the most important -- the horizontal window that go all around the house, that makes the private bedroom have a single light source.
At the most inside of the building where the bathroom locates, where it is far from the windows, Le Corbsiers made a skylight so that light can also penetrate into this private space without breaking its privacy.
The triangle shaped window at the ramp brings the light into the semi public space, the full glazing window which acts as the boundary between the semi private space and the garden(public space) makes this large living space have several light sources.

Roof: Fully public and the windows frame on the roof generate different views when looking at different angles.

The ramp and stairs: The stairs seperates one floor to another whereas the ramp connects them. This circulation devices are the leading signs that lead people transiting from different space. They lead people from private space on the ground floor to the public space on the
1st floor, it would be brighter and brighter as they are leaded to go up the building, people would have different experience and they would end up with being in the bright open roof garden.
